Chim-chimenee...

Len the welder came round this afternoon with our new chimney. I hope the design works, because basically it was my idea. The existing roof flange thingy should stick up through the lower section. helping to keep the upper section in place. It's still pretty heavy, so we don't want it falling down too often, especially as it would land on the engine room roof vent, which is wooden, but it should be a lot easier to lower than it currently is to remove. As well as the tall one, we are having a shorter one for tunnels and stretches with lots of low bridges. This is why the hinge is held together with a removable bolt, so the top half can be substituted.

I think thats a great chimney design and would like to ask you if I may copy it? I would suggest a small protruding lip brazed onto the top section to help locate it more securely and also let tar ETC. be made to run down inside the bottom (fixed) section, rather than oozing out the joint!

But the fool was not paying attention when I told him what we wanted and he welded the wrong part of the hinge on the 'titch' pipe. Still he is a good bloke - defined as cheap!!

Feel free and thanks for asking. It is very much a prototype though and you might want to wait for reports as to how it fares. Yes, I though a lip too though not sure whether its better having the tar (if any from diesel????) come out the bottom onto the roof than out the side. Mainly for locating though as you say and to stop it rattling, perhaps something with a little bit of spring to it.

There is nothing like electrode welding and a bright zink plated 'Nyloc' nut to give a real feeling of authenticity !!!

Hmm.. depends what you mean by authentic - it is what it is and isn't pretending to be anything else. It'll all be painted black anyway.
