Aaaagh, I've gone and done it.
Of course I don't like it.
Steve's instructions worked perfectly.
Adam is right, obviously I need to shrink the photo considerably before uploading it. Baz had already cropped it long and thin - it'll be perfect once we get the size sorted out. Any hints Adam as to what size works just to fill the width of the page?
The thing that really bugs me about this layout is the way the end of one post is squished right up against the title of the next one. Any way around that that anyone knows of?
I will keep persevering; I don't want to give up just because I'm an old stick-in-the-mud and resistant to progress, but I hope we can overcome these little glitches. In the meantime, please consider it very much a work in progress.

The properties of the picture across the top of my blog say it's 720 pixels wide, which equates to 25.4 cm.
As far as I remember, I used the hi-tech method of getting out a ruler and measuring the screen to see how wide the photo needed to be! After that, it was a matter of trial and error. I think I used either Picture It or Photo Premium, which allow you to set the width and automatically adjusts the height to match.
Hope that helps.
Thanks Adam - will get the ruler out and try after dinner.
You've cropped Jim! It may not be obvious to the casual observer, but I've seen the original of this photo, so I know that that blue blob is really Jim's tummy. In fact, you can see his complete reflection in the water. I'm hereby starting The Campaign For The Reinstatememt Of Jim. It's bad enough to be left off the signwriting, but to be removed from the photos? Stalinist, if you ask me.
